On location for local school bus stop arm and general bus safety video:
Dare County Schools Transportation Director David Twiddy enlisted Manteo Elementary School students Hunter and Blare Firth to help out on August 17 with a video about school bus safety and North Carolina's school bus stop arm laws. Assisting Twiddy with the video, shot by Community Relations Coordinator Sharon Perry Sullivan and MHS TA Hunt Thomas, was Manteo Police Chief Vance Haskett, Transportation Information Manager Wendy Schwartz, and bus driver Shannon Firth. Drivers are reminded to watch for students at and en route to and from their bus stops, as well as for those who walk or bike to school - AND - to be alert to decreased speed limits in school zones. Last May the fine for drivers in North Carolina went from $25 to $250 if convicted of speeding in a school zone.
Except for the 158 by-pass - where drivers coming from the opposite direction of a stopped school bus may pass - motorists must stop when they are behind or are approaching a school bus that is displaying its stop arm. Thanks to Hunter and Blare - great job!
