Close Examination - Park Ranger Jami Lanier took fourth grade students through close examinations of John White's drawings to find "clues" about what life was like on Roanoke Island for the colonists in a grade level enrichment activity in February. Here, MES students Donovan Twyne and Will Brown check out one of White's many illustrations of Native Americans.

MES 4th Grade History Sleuths Find Clues in Art - National Park Service Ranger Jami Lanier visited Manteo Elementary fourth grade classes in February for presentations about the Lost Colony. Lanier played an engaging "Did you know?" game with the students that piqued their interest in and increased their knowledge of the history surrounding the Lost Colony. Fourth grade teacher Esther Ballance said that students took on the role as historians as they examined John White's drawings to find clues and learn about life of the past. This enrichment opportunity integrated North Carolina social studies and art curriculums, and was coordinated by MES art teacher Mari Beth LaRose and the fourth grade teacher Esther Ballance.
