Student Artists Have Oceans of Talent!
What do Killer whales, typhoons, mermaids, and undersea caves have in common? In paint and graphite on paper, canvas, in collages and on skateboard blanks, they are all on display in the Coastal America Student Ocean Art contest at the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island through the month of February. The winners in each grade category will travel to regional competition at the end of the month.
As one of 23 Coastal Ecosystem Learning Centers in the Coastal America Partnership, the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island is honored to be part of the 2011-2012 Coastal America Ocean Art Contest. This international competition for public, private, and home-schooled students is aimed at increasing ocean literacy, especially among young people. Judging was held in four age groups, K–2, 3–5, 6–8, 9–12. Artistic themes were based on principles of ocean literacy.
Twenty four talented young artists from regional schools submitted entries. Aquarium Director Maylon White said about the exhibition, “At first glance, I was struck by the creative nature of the artwork. But the contest also required the participants to write about their work, what it represents to them, and how they approached the topic. Their narratives added another dimension to the presentations and emphasized the deep thinking that some of the artists used to create their work.”
The Coastal America Student Ocean Art Show is included in regular Aquarium admission. Admission: Ages 13-61:$8, Ages 62+: $7, Ages 2012:$6. No charge for children 2 and under, registered NC School groups and NC Aquarium Society members.
