The North Carolina High School Athletic Association has formed a new entity that will serve next year as a voice for student-athletes who participate in NCHSAA programs. Manteo High School junior Caroline Lowcher was named to represent Region 1 on the inaugural NCHSAA Student Advisory Council for 2010-2011. Coach Mike Dobbs nominated Caroline for this opportunity.
Dobbs recalls that when Principal John Luciano and Athletic Director Kenny Meekins asked if he could think of anyone who would make a good representative for the NCHSAA Student Advisory Council, Caroline instantly came to mind. "Caroline represents everything that is right with our young people today," notes Dobbs. "She is extremely intelligent, well-rounded, self-motivated, and relishes opportunities for new experiences. When I approached her to find out if she would be interested in this opportunity, the excitement she had for it was evident on her face. When she was appointed to the position you could sense that not only was she still excited, but honored as well. The manner in which she has engaged this opportunity is all the evidence you need to know that she will represent Manteo High School and Region 1 admirably on this council.
Caroline, 16, is the daughter of Matt and Donna Lowcher of Nags Head. In addition to attending Atlantic Dance after school for 11 years, she participated in cross country and soccer earlier in her high school career; she has played volleyball since a freshman.
"Being selected as one of eight students on the Inaugural Council on the NCHSAA is a great honor and gives me a chance to reach out of my community to make a positive influence in communities across the state and high school athletics," reflects Caroline.
The eight regional representatives comprising the new Student Athlete Advisory Council will develop a mission statement and set goals and objectives under the guidance of NCHSAA staff. The council will discuss topics that are relevant to high school student-athletes and develop ways to maintain a positive athletic experience. The SAAC will exemplify leadership and sportsmanlike conduct while carrying out the overall mission of the NCHSAA and the Student Services Division. Prior to the council’s start date, members will undergo leadership training to help build a solid team at the NFHS National Student Leadership Conference in July.
