FFMS sixth grade science students with teacher Pat Zimmerman presented instructional highlights at the Board of Education's December 13 meeting at First Flight Middle School.
Nancy Griffin, Dare County Schools Director of Secondary Instruction, introduced Zimmerman and the four sixth graders. "Pat Zimmerman is using Haiku, an online learning management system to schedule, organize, present and monitor student lessons, as well as to communicate with parents and actively involve them in their students' learning," described Griffin. "Students participate in a variety of online activities - both in and out of the classroom - to engage them in their study of science."
For the Board, Zimmerman's students, led by Mac McClary with classmates Grace Cobb, Lauren Daniels and Miles Kasten, demonstrated activities they completed in their unit on volcanoes and earthquakes - providing insight as to how aspects of the new Common Core Standards such as building vocabulary, literacy and communication skills - can be meaningfully incorporated in science lessons using technology as a learning tool.
