For Child Nutrition Staff Provided by Nags Head Fire Department
A full day of "back to school' training for Dare County Schools Child Nutrition managers and staff began with members of the Nags Head Fire Department presenting classroom and hands‑on fire safety sessions on April 19 at Nags Head Elementary School. NHFD representatives covered multiple subjects, such as use of fire extinguishers and how kitchen fire suppression systems work to stop fires and shut down equipment. Here, Firefighter Diego Dayan (left) supervises the hands on fire extinguisher practice as Zuleika Villamil of Kitty Hawk Elementary School does an impressive job of handling a fire extinguisher to douse flames in a galvanized tub as other Child Nutrition employees are queued for their turns. Dayan was assisted by NHFD colleagues Firefighters Anthony Dillon and Richard Gibbons; Fire Captain Steve Kovacs conducted the classroom session. NHFD provided fire safety literature to supplement the training that all Child Nutrition employees were required to attend. District Child Nutrition Director, Carol Sykes, commented that safety in the school environment is paramount and the Nags Head Fire Department provided an essential public service in equipping the Child Nutrition staff to be prepared in the event of a kitchen fire.
